PLEASLEY COLLIERY NR MONTHLY REPORT

JULY 2003

Highlights were as follows (68 species this month):

Little Grebe – Max 3 on 20th
Cormorant – 1 on 20th
Grey Heron – 1 on 20th & 29th
Greylag Goose – 3 on 27th
Shelduck – 1 over on 1st
Tufted Duck – Max c14 on 24th
Buzzard – 1 over on 4th
Hobby – 1 on 5th & 16th
Lapwing – Max 30+ on 18th
Dunlin – 1 on 29th
Snipe – 1 on 6th & 2 on 20th & 25th
Curlew – 1 on 5th & 6th
Common Sandpiper – 1 on 18th
BH Gull – Numbers increased dramatically in late July with 42 on 18th up to c300 on 31st
Common Gull – 1 on 15th & 30th
LBB Gull – Numbers increased from mid-July with Max 41 on 18th & 37 on 30th
Herring Gull – 1 on 29th
Common Tern – 1 on 12th, 3 on 29th & 4 on 30th
Feral Pigeon – Max 20 on the Pit Buildings on 30th
Turtle Dove – 4 on 5th
Little Owl – 1 on 31st
Swift – Max c40 on 31st
Green Woodpecker – Max 2 on 12th, 14th & 18th (recorded on 7 dates)
Swallow – Few recorded, max c30 on 31st
House Martin – c120 on 30th was by far the highest count
Grey Wagtail – 1 on 12th
Tree Pipit – 1 on 5th
Meadow Pipit – Max 12+ on 23rd
Reed Warbler – Max 2 singing on 29th
Lesser Whitethroat – 2 on 15th
Whitethroat – Max 5 on 31st
Blackcap – 1 on 17th
Chiffchaff – 1 on 3rd & 6th
Willow Warbler – Max 2 on 24th
Linnet – Large counts on 4 dates with 80+ on 4th, c100 on 16th, 300+ on 18th & 100+ on 23rd
Yellowhammer – Max 10+ on 14th July

17 species of butterfly seen during July including Painted Lady, Ringlet, Small Copper, Comma & Brimstone with large numbers of Gatekeepers by the months end.
2 Foxes on 3rd
