PLEASLEY COLLIERY NR MONTHLY REPORT

JUNE & July 2002

A total of 60 Species were reported in the recording area in June & 75 in July

Little Grebe – 1 on 2nd, 5th & 6th June and 5th July
Cormorant – 7 flew over on 19th July & 1 present on 26th & 31st July on the main pond
Grey Heron – Regularly seen from mid-June with a max of 5 on 21st June & 15th July
Mute Swan – 2 birds present most of June until last seen on 25th June
Gadwall – 3 on 11th June
Pochard – 1 on 2nd June & four records in July, 3 on 13th & 1 on 17th, 25th & 26th
Tufted Duck – 4 double figure counts in June with a max of 19 on 10th with small counts in July
Ruddy Duck – 1 present 26-29th July
Buzzard – 1 over the site on 27th July
Grey Partridge – Max 4 on 30th June & 11 on 25th July
Moorhen – A pair with chicks on 26th July represents the first breeding on site
Oystercatcher – 1 on 1st & 25th June
Lapwing – Max 13 on 20th June with the max for July of c50 on 21st & 29th
Dunlin – Singles on 30th June & 5 dates in July
Snipe – Two records in July, 1 on 12th & 2 on 29th
Black Tailed Godwit – 5 flew over on 26th
Ruff – 1 on 14th July
Whimbrel – 1 on 31st July
Curlew – 5 on 26th & 1 on 29th June and four records in July, 7 on 1st, 5 on 5th & 1 on 7th & 27th
Redshank – 1 on 21st June, 2 on 5th & 31st July and 1 on 17th, 18th & 26th July
Green Sandpiper – 1 on 24th June
Common Sandpiper – 1 on 10 dates from 17th July & 2 on 31st July
Turnstone – 1 on 31st July
BH Gull – Recorded on 8 dates in June with a max of 12 on 2nd. Numbers increased from mid July with
C60 reported on 23rd
Common Gull – 3 over on 17th July
LBB Gull – Recorded on 8 dates in June with a max of 5 on 16th. Numbers increased from mid July with
92 on 16th, c80 on 23rd & c300 (flying over) on 21st July
GBB Gull – 1 reported on 29th July
Common Tern – 2 on 20th and 1 on 24th to 27th June. 2 appeared on 8th July & birds were regularly seen
during the rest of the month with a max of 6 on 16th July
Little Owl – 1 on 6th & 13th June
Swift – The only double figure counts were 12 on 3rd June & 20+ on 16th July
Kingfisher – 1 on 6th was very unusual for this site
Green Woodpecker – 1 on 1st, 2nd, & 9th June and 7 dates in July
Woodlark – 1 reported flying west on 27th July
Skylark – Max 15+ on 7th June
Sand Martin – 1 on 7th June and 6 on 16th July & 1 on 19th July
Swallow – Recorded on only 3 dates in June (max of 2) & few in July with a max of 8 on 25th
House Martin – Numbers low with a max of 6 on 4 dates in June. More in July with a 24 max on 9th
Tree Pipit – 1 on 3rd, 6th, 7th & 8th June & 1 on 13th July
Meadow Pipit – Max 20+ on 7th June and c30 on 1st & 7th July
Yellow Wagtail – 1 reported on 18th June & 15th July with 2 on 17th July
Grey Wagtail – 1 on 4th July
Sedge Warbler – Two records in July, 1 on 26th & 2 on 27th
Reed Warbler – 1 singing from 21st July for a few days was the first record for this site
Lesser Whitethroat – 1 on 13th July was unusual
Whitethroat – Pair feeding fledged young on 12th June & up to 3 birds seen in July
Blackcap – 1 in the recording area on 4th June
Willow Warbler – 1 singing in the recording area on 6th June & 1st July
Willow Tit – 1 on 17th & 30th July
Rook – Max 60+ on 2nd June. None seen in July until 30 reported on 25th
House Sparrow – Max 9 on 30th June & 8 on 25th July
Linnet – Numbers increased greatly from mid July with c200 present on 19th & c300 on 27th
Reed Bunting – Max 3 on 1st & 14th June

Escape – A Zebra Finch was reported on 13th July
