Mid-Wales 10-12th May 2002

A long weekend in Mid-Wales (10-12th May, 2002) by John and Anne Wilson

Glorious weather and spectacular scenery throughout.
Plenty of Red Kites and various summer visitors.
Highly recommend Ynys-Hir (RSPB) Reserve - very quiet and unspoilt - lots of Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts and various warblers.
Also, main road west of Tregaron, towards Aberystwyth (A485) - terrific views over Tregaron Bog at bridge approx. 2 miles from Tregaron (Kites, Buzzards, hirundines, warblers etc).
Walk along old railway line, one mile north of Tregaron on Devils Bridge road (B4343) - alive with warblers - kites omni-present over hills to east.
B4353, north of Aberystwyth, (off the A487) - Borth - Ynyslas - Tre'r-ddol - superb, beautiful habitat - great potential all year round.
Road east of Tregaron, towards England(!) great for mountain species - recommend stop at bridge over river on Powys/Ceredigon border - south of Bryn Crwn mountain - for Whinchats, Wheaters, Kites, Peregrine, Raven, Dipper etc.
Stayed at Dyffryn Castell Hotel, 2 miles east of Ponterwyd, 14 east of Aberystwyth. - average sort of place - very friendly staff - lovely setting.
Road from Ponterwyd to Aberystwyth (A44) - superb for raptors - and great scenery.
Found nice bar/restaurant in Ponterwyd (George Borrow Hotel), run by couple from Eastwood, Notts - good food and real ale - Red Kites right over the garden!
